Bands that should make noise in 2010.

There are plenty of established bands that are planning a comeback this year and releasing new material. Among them are Maldita Vecindad, a band that hasn’t released an album since 1996 and Andres Calamaro, who’s been very active in the last few years. And of course, we’ll see plenty of new bands with albums and EPs. What else can we expect this year? Here’s a list of upcoming releases:

  • Maldita Vecindad: I haven’t listened to a MV album in a long time, as I grew older their music no longer appealed to me. However, no one can deny their influence in many contemporary bands and their legacy in the Latin Ska world. A new album after a long hiatus deserves a chance.
  • Austin TV: They have confirmed new songs on their myspace page and we might get a complete album by late Spring.
  • Los Suaves: A survivor of the late 70’s, this old-school punk band from Spain will release an album in late January. Hopefully we’ll get it in the States as well.
  • El Otro Yo: Argentinan rockers are putting the final touches to a new album.
  • Canseco: Mexican indie band is scheduled to release their second LP.
  • Andres Calamaro: There are confirmed rumors that Calamaro has an album ready for 2010 and that he had some collaborations Niño Josele, Loquillo and Calle 13.
  • Hello Seahorse! : The most praised Mexican band of 2009 released a special edition of their album “Bestia” a few months ago. Will we get it in the US as well? Time will tell.
  • Los Dynamite: These guys released a single last year, but I think we can expect an actual LP later on this year.
  • La Barranca; Expect an album from this Mexican cult-band sometime in the Summer
  • Banda de Turistas: Hailed as the “next Babasonicos”, they have an album about to be released in the US in February.

And of course, you can never count out the surprises that will come out of SXSW in Austin, Texas or the Vive Latino Festival in Mexico City. A lot of bands get signed and released right after those events.

2010 should be another exciting year for Latin Alternative, so stay tuned and pay attention!
