Tasha Rodrigues’ “Tirando Pedras” winner of the ‘Multietnic’ award of 2007 for best album, was proclaimed best female vocalist of the year in Italy, in November 2008 at the Auditorium Parco Della Musica, Rome. Here she talks about her respect for Miriam Makeba, the musician and the woman:


Indieoma: 1) Where/when/how did you meet Miriam Makeba?


TR: I met her about ten years ago, in Recanti, Italy, whilst filming a tv show.


Indieoma: What did she represent to you?


TR: She represents a lot to me; freedom, power – she is simply an extraordinary woman, who fought not with a gun, but with music, and I am proud to be African and take part in the Miriam Makeba event. It is the minimum I can do.


Indieoma: Can you explain to us the meaning of the song “Pata Pata” and tell us what this song means to you personally?


TR: The Pata Pata song, means fun, literally ‘touch, touch’. Makeba would explain that it is time to have fun with Pata Pata, and everybody would start to move as soon as the song started, until the morning sun begins to shine





Indieoma: What do you expect from Miriam Makeba tribute in Italy?


TR: Well I just think she deserves the maximum repsect from all of us because if there is Obama, today it is because people like Makeba and Nelson Mandela and many others sacrificed their lives to make this world a better place.

Indieoma: Dove / quando / come hai incontrato Miriam Makeba?


TR: L’ho incontrata una decina di anni fa, a Recanati, in Italia,
durante le riprese di uno show televisivo.


Indieoma: Cosa ha rappresentato per te?


TR: Lei per me rappresenta molto: la libertà, la forza – è stata
semplicemente una donna straordinaria, che non ha combattuto con le
armi, ma con la musica. Sono orgogliosa di essere Africana e prendere
parte alla manifestazione del Miriam Makeba Tribute a Roma. E’ il
minimo che posso fare.


Indieoma: Puoi spiegarci il significato della canzone “Pata Pata” e
dirci cosa significa questa canzone per te in prima persona?


TR: La canzone “Pata Pata” significa divertimento, letteralmente
“tocca, tocca”’. La Makeba voleva spiegare che è il momento di
divertirsi con Pata Pata, e tutti devono muoversi non appena la
canzone comincia e continuare fino a quando il sole del mattino non
comincia a sorgere.
