I first discovered Des O’Connor (this Des O’Connor, not that Des O’ Connor) at last year’s Fringe. He was the compère/co-creator of “And The Devil Will Drag You Under”; a cabaret-come-variety show set in hell (ironically the venue was an old church). It collected some of the best acts of the Fringe via a loose storyline in which the audience was asked to deliver a verdict; “will they be going to heaven or will they be staying here in hell?” The idea was that hell was a lot more fun than heaven.

The idea of a theatrical adaptation of Hemmingway’s novella is nothing if not ambitious: for most of the story nothing happens. The writer/director and viewer for that matter are therefore left to ponder how best to fill the time. The solution is remarkable and the result is experimental theatre at its best. The Old Man And The Sea tells the story of Santiago, an old, and currently very unsuccessful, Cuban fisherman. Anyone who has tried will know that fishing can be a very, very slow business.
